Understanding Insurance Costs

When you use health insurance for therapy or other mental health services, there are a few common costs you may be responsible for:

Questions to Ask Your Insurance Company

- Is this provider in network?
- Do I have a deductible for mental health visits?
- Do I owe a co-pay or co-insurance?
- Is there a separate deductible for out-of-network care?

- What is my out-of-pocket maximum?
- Do I need prior authorization for therapy or psychological testing?

Deductible

A deductible is the amount you must pay yourself before your insurance starts paying for covered services. For example, if your deductible is $1,000, you pay the first $1,000 of covered care before your plan begins to help more with the cost. For therapy, this means you may need to pay the full allowed session cost until your deductible is met, unless your plan has a special lower copay for mental health visits.

Co-Pay

A co-pay is a fixed dollar amount you pay for a visit, such as $20 or $40 per session. It is usually the same each time you come in, as long as the service is covered by your plan. Some plans use a co-pay instead of co-insurance, and some use both depending on the type of service.

Co-Insurance

Co-insurance is a percentage of the cost you pay after your deductible has been met. For example, if your co-insurance is 20%, you pay 20% of the allowed cost and your insurance pays the other 80%.

Other Charges

Out-of-pocket costs are the amounts you pay yourself for health care. This can include deductibles, co-pays, co-insurance, and other charges your plan does not cover. Most plans also have an out-of-pocket maximum, which is the most you pay for covered in-network services in a year. After you reach that limit, your plan usually pays 100% of covered services for the rest of the year.
